Wrestling – Fivay Falcons Conference Champions!

HUDSON–  The Fivay Falcons were on a mission to capture the school's first Conference Championship in any sport.  The wrestlers were focused from the start and came in hoping for multiple conference champions.  They were able to achieve their goal by running away with the Sunshine Athletic Conference 2012 Championship.

The Falcons ended up qualifying Eight Wrestlers (out of 14 weight classes) for the Final Round and had Four Individual Champions.  At 126 Pounds, Senior Jesse Barker went 3-0 on the day with a pin in his first match, a decision 6-4 in his second and he pinned Skyler White in the Finals to win the bracket.

The next Champion for the Falcons was Senior Dominick Grilli at 170 pounds.  Grilli didn't receive a first round bye so he had four matches total on the day.  He ended up pinning his way to the championship round and won a hard fought decision 12-7 vs. David Hayes from Mitchell HS.

Sophomore Nicco Lightfoot at 182 pounds was the next Falcon to claim his spot on the top of the Championship podium.  Lightfoot had a first round bye and also pinned his way to the finals.  In the Championship bout he wrestled one of the most exciting matches of the round and beat Austin Lopez from Sunlake 15-12.  Nicco now holds a record of 35-1 for the season, only the second year of wrestling for Lightfoot.

Senior Mike Hahn at 220 pounds, was the last Falcon to claim a championship ribbon for the Falcons.  There were only Seven wrestlers in the 220 pound weight class and Hahn ended up receiving byes in the first two rounds of the tournament.  Hahn then pinned his way to the championship with a fall in 20 seconds in the Semi-Finals and also a fall in the Finals in the Third Period over Zack Jordan of Pasco High School.  Hahn now possesses a season record of 32-0 heading into the District Tournament.

Earning Second Place Finishes for the Falcons were Troy Reed (113), Sean Speer (120), Colin Hahn (160) and Kelly Meus (285).  All of the second place finishers are Juniors, and will be the core of leaders for the grapplers next season.  Speer wrestled in the toughest weight class of the tournament with the #1, 6, 7, and 12 ranked wrestlers from Class 1A and the #6 ranked wrestler from Class 2A.

Other Place-winners for the Falcons were Sophomore Cole Manion 5th at 106, Sophomore Andrew Scherer 3rd at 138, and Junior Dominick Bradford 4th at 195.

The Falcons finished the tournament with the most individual wins (36), least number of losses (11), and most wins by Fall (18).
